It's the best part of a decade since I was here, and there's been a big improvement. There's no background music that I could discern, and definitely no cooking smells. Although the tables are all set for dining, I spotted one that had a couple of empty glasses left by previous occupants, so I sat myself down with my beer. Of course the major improvement is the beer, which was expertly poured and was at the right temperature and in very good condition. With a choice of Tirril Castlerigg Blonde, Bowness Swan Blonde and Carlisle Cumbrian Bitter I was always going to go for the last named, though I wouldn't say it's by any means a favourite. So with a bit of time to spare before my train I had a half of the Swan too, and this was in equally good condition, and actually a better drink as well. This is well worth a look in if in the area, as well as being handy for the station if just passing through.

An attractive pub in a pleasant village in the Eden valley, the Shepherds Inn has found a new lease of life by going down the food-led route that is often the only way that out-of-the-way country pubs can make a living. Unfortunately, this means that it is not a very pleasant experience for the casual beer tourist. I entered to a strong smell of fried fish, which is never a good sign. On the bar were four hand pumps, but only three beers were on. In fact, the beer I tried was very much on its way to being off, initially disguised by the extremely low temperature at which it was served. With all tables set for diners, I found a place to sit in a window seat, balancing my beer glass on the ledge. With smell and taste assaulted by unwanted sensations, it was inevitable that Céline Dion would make an appearance on the CD player, warbling a raucous farewell as I hastily made my way out of the door.
