When I cycled from Eskdale to Borrowdale on a warm and ultimately thundery day, I called in here for refreshment, somewhat surprised by the change of name from the Fish, but apart from a lick of paint and some new upholstery, nothing much seems to have changed - though I hope they've managed to complete renovating the floorboards in the year or so since my visit. The bar counter looked a lot like I remembered it, though the beers were from Cumberland Brewery of Great Corby near Carlisle and Allendale Brewery near Hexham: a pleasant change from Jennings. My well-earned pint of Allendale Pennine Pale was very good. The only downside of my visit, apart from the prospect of getting over Honister Pass on my bicycle, was the "jolly pop music" which my notes made at the time suggested was to make any day trippers from Blackpool feel more at home.

The dining room tables look less regimented than I recall, though I still prefer the "side-chapels" when I have the choice. There was no background music, which is always a bonus for me. The bar is still the handsome affair I described in my review of six years ago, but now sports eight hand pumps (one empty - see photos) with three from Jennings, plus Theakstons Old Peculier and three from Lake District micros. All the beers I tried were in excellent condition, though I have a gripe about the pricing: I paid £3.30 for a pint of Jennings Bitter, which is reasonable for the area, but in the evening when I came back I had two halves of Sneck Lifter and Old Peculier and was charged £4.35 - maybe it was happy hour before?

cant beat the place for location and it makes the most of it by having a spectacular beer garden.
Food was quick, good value and quality.
Ales were varied - with Castlerigg IPA and Thwaites Bitter in great condition.
