Another Darlington revisit for me, as I enjoyed the place on my previous visit a few years ago.

Loads of hand pulls to go at, I think I counted 14 in total with 10 of those being clipped. Unfortunately there wasn't much variety in styles across the cask options with bitters and pale ales heavily dominating, however there was a Sussex Mild available. I went for a Zetland Gold branded as Village Brewer, but is actually brewed by Hambleton. I was actually a little disappointed by this beer. £2.40 for a half. Keg options available too, including standard, German and Hawkstone offerings.

The place has a bit of a fancy vibe to it, with staff in tabards. No music was playing. There are weird material covered rectangles attached to the ceiling; that and the poor state of the ceiling wallpaper are not really in keeping with this otherwise smart establishment. The front area is very traditional with etched and stained glass and dark wood that looks to be of some age. As indeed does the carpet in the front raised section... Lovely curved windows to the front.

Card only, so don't rock up with a wad of cash or you will be disappointed.

Number Twenty 2 is a long and thin wooden floored pub with raised seating in the windows either side of the central entrance and a beer shelf up the left-hand wall opposite the L-shaped serving counter mid-way up the right. A mix of seating, including benches, banquettes and more shelving are found in the carpeted rear where there’s a dirty whitewashed feature wall that looks like it belongs in a pub cellar. I counted 12 hand pumps across the counter, the chalkboard listed Daleside Brewery’s Morocco Ale and Bitter, Thornbridge’s Crackendale, St Austell’s Tribute, Hadrian Border Brewery’s Farne Island, Orkney Brewery’s North Light as well as Zetland, Bull and White Boar from Hambleton Brewery’s Village Brewer range. There’s also a premium and craft keg selection, but I went for Daleside’s Bitter which I didn’t really like, but I recognised the taste so I think I ‘ve had it before and didn’t like it then, I really must try to remember these ales! This is a tidy bar with friendly staff, so is certainly worth the double header with the ORB a couple of doors down.

Upmarket middle-class place with smartly turned-out staff. Surprised it closes at 10pm on a Thursday as it was very busy and could have easily kept going for another hour. Unsure how much of the elegant and characterful interior is recent but suspect it has mostly been bussed-in from reclamations. Someone needs to give the place a spring clean as they still had a sign up for NYE 2024! Vast amount of ale pumps (and an inevitable GBG listing), too many for this tired correspondent to try and count (16, says the review below). There were three on from Village Brewer who were new to me so I plumped for Bull Premium which felt a bit aged/low turnover (NBSS 2.5) but that’s what vast cask offering can end-up doing to the laggard pump(s). Also available were a fair range of offbeat Euro keg and a couple of ciders. Overall it’s an oddity – I rather liked the pub but clearly there were too many ales on and just little things like the long-gone events sign made me wonder. Felt like it should be the best all-rounder in Darlo but missed the mark for me on this occasion. 7.5
