I can't remember when I was last here, but I didn't write a review on that occasion and my memory is of ranks of dining tables. The present owners, a young man and his Czech wife and their child, was unlucky in that he took possession in February, just before the Covid-19 lock down. He has taken some time to get the place looking right, which I thought it did, and complimented him on. On reflection, I expect that in normal times they would have had plenty of tables set out for diners, too.
It's going to be a struggle for them in the present circumstances, and this was reflected in the slightly iffy quality of the beer I had. There were four hand pumps, with four beers on, and I went for the same beer I'd had at the pub in Starbotton down the valley a couple of hours previously. This version definitely suffered in the comparison (though not enough to ask for it to be changed). There were two beers from Dark Horse, a competent brewery in nearby Hetton, plus Tetleys and Wharfedale Blonde. I hope they make a go of it, as it's a lovely pub in one of my favourite parts of Yorkshire, and they seem like nice people, but I'm afraid it's likely to be tough.

Beautiful place to stay - everything was perfect.... Black Sheep - Room - and food.
Recently reopened under new management and I hope they are a success. It deserves to be.
