No cask. Keg offering of Guinness, Camden Hells and Pale Ale, Kopparberg crisp apple cider, Peroni, San Miguel, Becks and Stella.

This has recently reopened after being shut for a while – I tried a couple of times in those pandemic summers when it was sometimes a bit difficult from on-line stuff as to whether some places had re-opened. Corner pub, bare boarded L shaped venue with the bar counter in the rear left-hand corner. The rear is up a step and there are a small number of regular tables and chairs in that area. In the front section, banquettes around the external walls to the left and right of the entrance serving regular tables, with ornamental velvet upholstered chairs the other side thereof. A few tall tables between the entrance and the bar counter. Some TV screens above the bar and showing the women's cricket World Cup between England and South Africa on my visit. Most striking thing on walls is a large mural of the South Bank outside the old County Hall approaching Tower Bridge.

My second visit here and my first in around six years, since which time it has been substantially smartened up.

There's the usual array of premium lagers, GK IPA and Abbot's which was fine as far as Abbot's goes. Also on, Sadler's Ales Brewery's One Stop Hop. This pub seems a lot more pleasant than last time, though is a little gloomy and given that The Star around the corner has just closed, this is the best pub in the immediate area, not that what few surviving pubs in St. John's Wood are that great anyway - I'd rather take the 20-minute walk to Primrose Hill and drink there.

The crying baby and kids running around are a definite minus as is the pack of dogs, constantly underfoot.

This is a gastrofied Greene King pub with Abbot, GKIPA and London Gold (£1.95 a half) on, but unfortunately no guest ale. But this is not really a pub intended primarily for beer drinkers. A raised area at the back on the right had all tables laid for diners, but I didn't see a menu in the bar area at the front where I obviously spent my visit. There was a cocktail menu on the table, but obviously there was no earthly reason why I should want to look in it.

The main bar area has some sofas on the left, but the rest of the room is furnished with normal tables and chairs. All the tables had a potted succulent plant on them, and one table even had a tablecloth on it! But this room nevertheless had a certain restrained luxury to it that I found somehow appealing. The well-behaved pub dog added a certain pseudo rustic charm, sitting on one of the bar stools obviously enjoying a well-earned rest from the rigours of the day. The back of the servery looked a bit like a 1950s sweet shop with shelves laden with large jars containing boiled sweets. Decor possibly? For me the most negative point was the waste of space modern art on the walls, with the cricket related stuff relegated to the gents.

This is a comfortable enough pub, and they have clearly gone to some effort to make it appear attractive to the demographic group they see as potential customers, but I can't summon up much enthusiasm for it. Greene King beers are average at best in my opinion, though the handpulled ales in here are a darned sight better than the keg stuff they are dishing up at The Duke of York down the road. I don't expect to make a return trip, but I accept that some will regard this uber comfortable pub as the bee's knees.
