The punters seemed happy, the barman was cheery and the temperature was pleasant, but that was the limits of the positives, I am afraid, to this substantial Stonegate town pub. The whole subterranean place had an unkempt feel, not helped by stacks of dirty dishes on the tables, and there were far too many sports screens. Even the Doom Bar was off leaving Tribute and Razorback on the handpumps. The latter seemed just about tolerable but rapidly descended into 'I wish I'd sent this back' territory. One to swerve.

No longer goose branded. A large open plan interior serving 5 real ales and food.

The Goose on the Market is a large open plan high street pub where cheap food and drink can be purchased. The bar runs up the right hand wall where standard draught products are supported. There are also six hand pumps that were all, unforgivingly, badged up with Greene King IPA.

Plasma screens are located throughout for showing live sports on Sky and BT Sports. There are also a couple of pool tables that were being used by some locals that looked as though they hand been in the pub all day. I suppose this was of no surprise considering this pub is cheaper than Wetherspoons. I did chuckle to myself when I heard one customer say to his friend who was moaning about an unpaid debt “How can a man of so little means be owed money?”

I’d rather pay the extra and drink somewhere pleasant so I’ll not be returning in a hurry.
