This is a 2001 shop conversion for the Black Sheep brewery, so no surprises that it’s a bit of a hipster hangout.
I went for the Bitter which was nice, but a couple in our group complained about the quality of their Respire, which was indeed on the turn, causing two of our crawlers to complain. The generous barman offered a replacement but instead, they asked for a couple of bags of nuts by way of recompense. And I’d paid for the round! Cheeky so-and-sos.
With so many quality cask/heritage pubs in York, I can’t recommend this one for a revisit.

Known locally as the Wonky Donkey, this shop conversion is owned by Black Sheep. It's open plan with some circular tables and high tables to the front, the bar back to the right then a couple of small sections with seating before a tiny, scruffy outside area.It all felt a little sparse when it came to decoration apart for some old maps and picture of Viking impersonators who sometime invade the city centre pubs.
Ale selection on my trip was Black Sheep Respire (not right, vinegar),Best Bitter,Blonde (NBSS 3),and Riggwelter with a single guest of Mighty Oak Summer and two Lilly ciders.
There are some great ale houses in York and this is not one of them,I would swerve on my next city visit.

Situated not far from York Minster, this was the only pub still open when I arrived on the street late on a Monday evening. In fact, I saw a couple of people leaving which would have left the pub empty had I not walked in very shortly after.
The amenable barman/landlord was happy to chat whilst cleaning up around me. Unlike many, he was also happy to keep the pub open to enable me to indulge in a swift half.
I was last in here almost 10 years ago when it was owned by York Brewery. He explained that Black Sheep had purchased the pub as it is in some kind of city centre exclusion zone that prevents any new pubs from opening.
Black Sheep beers on were Best Bitter, Blonde, Riggwelter & Respire. Guests were Three Legs Oat Stout & Anarchy Blonde Star. There was also a decent selection of traditional ciders - Lilley's Pineapple, Strawberry, Rhubarb & Mango Ciders, Broadoak Moonshine & Perry, Weston's Old Rosie, Thistly Cross Whisky Cask & Ampleforth Abbey Cider. Craft beers were Black Sheep Milk Stout, Burrow's IPA, Ensueno & Side Quest, Tiny Rebel Electric Boogaloo & Shiny Wipeout.
I only scored this a 6/10 on my previous visit and don't particularly recall what it was like. I'll certainly be increasing my score to a 7/10 and it is verging on an 8/10.
