"A genuine drinking-type pub in the city centre, but it has room for improvement" wrote another reviewer on here three years ago, almost to the day. I reckon it has improved since then, with beer quality better and now five cask ales available (four Bateman's and a guest), and not in the sometimes questionable condition that I can recall from before Covid. Also the pub interior is smarter and not in the least grotty, and the customers are well behaved and pleasant - at least they were at around 6pm this Wednesday evening, but I can only speak as I find. This was always my first pub of the day when a group of pub crawlers used to join me on the train from Sheffield to Lincoln 20 years ago, and I reckon it's back to being as good now as it was then. (And there's no longer any need to wait for the level crossing barriers to be raised, since they built the lifts for pedestrians to get to the other side of the tracks when they've got a thirst on.)

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Treaty of Commerce

Refurbished Batemans pub, with light decoration and semi-modern furniture in both the front bar and rear lounge. Quite boisterous early on a Friday evening. XB, Gold, Dark M (£4.40) and XXXB on four of the five handpumps, along with Landlord as a guest.

The last pub of the day for me and I probably didn’t see this one at its best. Firstly, outside the neighbouring buildings are currently covered in scaffolding so, especially at night, you lose the mock Tudor features and feels like you are entering a tunnel. Secondly, as Mr Fastard says below, it was packed with alpha male types vertical drinking on this Friday evening with a bit of a queue at the bar. I stood for a while but when I was close enough to recognise that there were the usual Bateman beers and only TT Landlord as a guest I made the strategic decision that I was more in need of something to eat before catching the train rather than another beer, so left to find some fast food nosebag. Therefore, it would be wrong of me to leave a rating.
I would consider returning to this one though as, although I thought the long thin interior was a bit characterless, google maps does show it having a very nice long courtyard garden area out back that looks to be the best part of the pub IMHO.
