The Star & Garter is a small pub with a black wooden floor and three front doors that were open on a recent clement Friday evening to allow access to outside where standing is permitted behind a velvet rope. There’s a central L-shaped serving counter that faces the open front and seating up the right-hand wall. Additional seating is found behind the counter in the left rear corner. Premium and mainstream craft keg options were available from the polite barmaid, but only one of the three hand pumps was in use, drawing Harveys Best. The pub itself is an OK spot, but the loud Friday night gangster rap put me right off and I was glad to leave.

Tucked away down a quiet side street, but nonetheless only just around the corner from the more touristy hotspots, this is perhaps more of a local’s pub and was reasonably quiet on our recent Monday evening visit.

It’s a fairly compact, single room pub, with the bar counter taking up quite a bit of the available floor space. Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with black wooden boards on the floor that have been worn smooth over the years, dark brown wood panelling on the walls, and further brown painted wood panelling on the ceiling. That might make it sound gloomy, but I thought it had a bit of character and there were plenty of bits and bobs all over the walls including old black and white pictures, a plate rack, and what I took to be a selection of internal engine parts, although I could well be mistaken. The bar had plenty of foliage hanging over it from the shelving above, although whether it was real or not I don’t know. I suspect not. A TV screen up on the wall showing the snooker seemed slightly out of place, but at least the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.

The solitary beer on tap was Timothy Taylor Landlord which was served a little too cold for my liking, with the two other pumps having their clips reversed. One of these was Sharp’s Solar Wave, I couldn’t see what the other one was. The solitary cider meanwhile was Aspall’s.

Another pub revisited after a couple of decades have past and pleasingly little has changed. Just a couple of other blokes in whilst I was there but this is a pub that doesn't have to be full to feel like a proper pub. The Landlord was in good shape, the beer ,not the geezer behind the jump. I'll not leave it so long next time before looking in again.
