Tucked away down a quiet side street, but nonetheless only just around the corner from the more touristy hotspots, this is perhaps more of a local’s pub and was reasonably quiet on our recent Monday evening visit.

It’s a fairly compact, single room pub, with the bar counter taking up quite a bit of the available floor space. Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with black wooden boards on the floor that have been worn smooth over the years, dark brown wood panelling on the walls, and further brown painted wood panelling on the ceiling. That might make it sound gloomy, but I thought it had a bit of character and there were plenty of bits and bobs all over the walls including old black and white pictures, a plate rack, and what I took to be a selection of internal engine parts, although I could well be mistaken. The bar had plenty of foliage hanging over it from the shelving above, although whether it was real or not I don’t know. I suspect not. A TV screen up on the wall showing the snooker seemed slightly out of place, but at least the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.

The solitary beer on tap was Timothy Taylor Landlord which was served a little too cold for my liking, with the two other pumps having their clips reversed. One of these was Sharp’s Solar Wave, I couldn’t see what the other one was. The solitary cider meanwhile was Aspall’s.

Another pub revisited after a couple of decades have past and pleasingly little has changed. Just a couple of other blokes in whilst I was there but this is a pub that doesn't have to be full to feel like a proper pub. The Landlord was in good shape, the beer ,not the geezer behind the jump. I'll not leave it so long next time before looking in again.

Having stayed in London overnight after a Luton Town midweek game, I was at a bit of a loose end until the pubs opened. This one was promising, with 11am opening mentioned on WhatPub, but when I arrived there was no sign of life so I went and bought something at the nearby Pret. A young man with keys eventually let himself in at about 11:15 and at 11:23 he invited me in too, though he was still setting up for the day's business. So I guess the 11am is more of a guide than a promise. This is a lovely mid-terrace pub with dark brown wood panelling and loads of pictures and paraphernalia on the walls, and an impressive Star & Garter mirror on the back wall (see photos). The small bar counter has Timothy Taylor Landlord and Harveys Sussex Best. The latter was probably NBSS 3.25, except that quarter marks are not allowed, so I gave it a slightly generous 3.5. I would be happy to return, but I'd try to find something else to do before 11:30 next time.
