Situated under Stockport's landmark viaduct, I really enjoyed seeing the interior of this pub, with quite a few rooms available to select from.

The main doorway leads straight into the bar, where there is very limited seating (I recall just one high table). There is a room off to the right (where there is another entrance/exit door), one to the rear of the bar and two more to the far left (front and rear). The decor is maroon and cream with maroon leather banquettes. Floors are bare boarded with tiling in the entranceway, giving it a traditional feel. I sat in the front left room, where there were still some bell pushes and some Bass memorabilia.

Pop music was playing at an unobtrusive level in the background, whilst TVs show the pubs wares through Untappd. Dogs are allowed in and there is a quiz night on the last Monday of the month.

For my visit, the regular beer Bass was supplemented by Durham Mythic Storm, George Shaw Common, Kirkby Lonsdale Devil's Bridge IPA, Bank Top Bad To The Bone & Burton Bridge Sovereign Gold. There was at least one spare handpull (not handpulls are spread across 2 rooms). Craft beers were Thornbridge Green Mountain, Marble Formidable Cherry, Beavertown Gamma Ray & Courier Last Caress. The cider was Aspall's. Although there were a few real ciders in bottles.

This pub has failed to appear in the Good Beer Guide since 2018. It is clearly one of Stockport's best pubs, with 6 cask ales and some decent keg options too. Of the 4 cask ales I tried, all were in really good condition. Looking at the reviews below, it seems the recent change in ownership is getting it back to what it was. Hopefully it will appear in GBG 2027.

First visit since the good folk at the Petersgate Tap have taken the place on. They have done a great job revitalising the interior and getting the ale choice improved. Ended-up playing a joker in here as I was in early to meet a Twitter based cooking lager acquaintance. NBSS scores on the doors - Boddy 3.5, Bass 3, Blackjack Squalor 3.5, Holts Sixex 4. Rated 8.5

A quick revisit found things as usual. I ended-up with a Poynton Viaduct which was passable (I paid the price for not sticking to class breweries like Oakham I suppose). Maybe I was unlucky, but so far my beer has been 50/50 over four attempts. The atmosphere and interior are first rate, mind you. Rated 8

Iconic freehouse located pretty spectacularly in the shadow of the vast rail viaduct that spans the Mersey and bisects this part of Stockport. Inside is a traditional multi-roomed old schooler with many original features - snugs, leather bench seats, bell-pushes, dividers and the like leading off the main bar. A quiet pub, so just the hubbub of conversation on my visit. One of the biggest simultaneous cask ranges in the UK, with (so I’m told – I didn’t bother to count) up to 16 ales available at any one time. Tried three of the beers, two from Stockport and one from Salopian. Quality was good, though one I think was at the fag-end of the barrel and in retrospect I should have taken it back. It’s a fine pub and absolutely worth a special trip to sample. Rated 9

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Crown Inn

Landmark pub, despite being somewhat dominated by the massive railway viaduct and looking rather isolated as many formerly neighbouring buildings must have been cleared away at some stage. Plenty of interesting decorative features both inside and out, with both aspects benefitting from a recent refurbishment following a change of ownership. Traditional furniture in the main bar, back room (with fireplace) and two side rooms. Four handpumps on both the front and right-hand side counters, with an interesting selection of cask ales in various styles. These ranged from the reinvigorated Boddingtons (reflecting the original ownership) and Bass to the Blackjack Brew Squalor (£4.80) and others from Blackedge, Torrside, Joseph Holt, Allsopp's and Colbier. A very welcome return to form.
