As described, this Shepherd Neame pub is trying to evolve into a trendy cocktail bar but falling somewhat short. On entry we were greeted by several clueless young females who insisted we sat down with a menu even though we made it clear we only wanted a drink. It was too much effort for them to bring us drinks until we had sat, read the menu and placed our order. Two pints of Whitstable Bay – which bit of that was hard to remember? On arrival the beer was in very poor condition, only just drinkable. Masterbrew and Spitfire were also on offer but we didn’t stay long enough to try either. Not worth the bother.

This large Shepherd Neame pub built in 1802 is a short walk away from the town centre and takes its name from the East Coast Regiment (or the Buffs as military historians will have you know).

It has often been overlooked by my happy band of annual Oyster Festival pub crawlers as it is always a pint too far at the end of a long day and when we have called in it more often than not disappoints either on the beer front or the boisterous customer base.

The interior is divided into various small rooms around a central island bar, most of which have been knocked through into each other but retaining their individuality. One corner houses a pool table and dart board and at the rear is an outhouse now connected to the main building containing bar billiards and a table football game. One of the best features (if the weather allows) is the mainly decked but spacious beer garden with a petanque court and old adverts on display.

The beers are quite mundane with just Spitfire and Master Brew from the Shepherd Neame range available but decent enough quality on our latest visit. A further 2 pumps were unused.

Our recent visit was probably the best we have found the place and for a relaxing pint in the garden, it was fine although I imagine it is still a bit of a hit and miss place. I would certainly be prepared to give it another shot in the future.
