Large detached pub with tables and parasols outside. The bar is through the door on the right and is a small wooden affair with 5 hand pumps , 3 Theakston’s , a wainwright’s and a Cameron’s on my visit, I went for the Cameron’s Strongarm which was a well kept and tasty pint. The bar area has a wooden floor, leather chairs and seats and a coal burner given it a cosy local feel, it’s also dog friendly with a couple of well behaved K9’s on my visit. Around the corner from the bar is a large carpeted restaurant part of the pub which goes back a considerable way.

Local folklore has it that in the Middle Ages, a local lad called Richard Pollard was granted an area of land by the Bishop of Auckland as a reward for slaying a ferocious boar that was terrorisng the town. Whether the pub was named after the area or the legend’s hero I am not sure but if it were the latter, I’m sure Mr Pollard would be delighted to sink a few pewters in what is certainly one of the best pubs in town.
From the outside it looks like a typical edge of town residential pub but the interior is deceptively large with various fully carpeted, interconnecting rooms surrounding an island bar. The front main bar area has a dart board and flat screen TV and seemed to be the most popular place for the locals to gather. Beyond is a neat and tidy lounge area with various trophies on display and a further TV. The pub was expanded a couple of years back and now has an elegant and spacious dining area at the rear. Outside is a patio with benches and also a sizeable car park.
The pub has a good reputation for Real Ales and they were clearly the drink of choice amongst the customer base. 5 available during my visit – 3 from Marsten’s (Fever Pitch, Pedigree and Merrie Monk) plus Jennings Cumberland and Ringwood 49er with a further 2 pumps unused.
The ambience was very genial and hassle free and the fact that the pub was thriving where all the other pubs we visited during the evening were bereft of customers says a lot for its local reputation. The pub does perhaps lack a bit in character and in many similar sized towns it would be seen as a bit bland but as far as Bishop Auckland goes, Pollard’s should be one of the first pubs on the list to visit.

A great pub.The quality of food served from their tasty menu is fantastic and their selection of real ales and wines is unmatched in the surrounding area. The staff are friendly and cannot do enough for you.For anyone looking to have a great night out with the family in a warm and friendly atmosphere, or even just unwind with a few beers infront of their huge roaring open fire, the Pollards Inn is a definate "Must Visit".Will be going back again in the very near future.
