Delightful isolated Pennine pub below Holwick Scars. Looks a bit like something from Tolkien. A rainy October Wednesday lunchtime, a group of us ate hearty portions of steak and Kidney pudding by the fire. Wonderful atmosphere, with a very enthusiastic landlady.
Three ales on handpump: Allendale’s Golden Plover, an unusually satisfying Golden Ale,together with the autumnally ubiquitous Hobgob and, something of a blast from the past,Cameron’s Trophy Special. A cider was also available on handpump.
Inspite of the inclement weather, and the apparent isolation, this pub was busy with locals and tourists (us!),and had a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. In fact, it was my Northern pub of the year for 2013.

This is a lovely friendly real ale pub at the end of a no through road about 3 miles from Middleton in Teesdale but worth a visit for the good food and ale. They had Cameron's Trophy Special and Allendale Golden Plover on while we were there and we enjoyed them with an excellent meal and desert. The bar area of the room that made me think of a front parlour of an old house had a crowd of locals in and there was a lot of friendly banter there. They don't take credit cards for payments. There is a small room off the bar with a pool table, and the room off there is the breakfast room for guests staying. Well worth a visit.

The Strathmore Arms is a village pub with 3 good real ales & pub grub. It has a pool table and by all accounts has 4 letting rooms and a campsite. It also does a cracking Sunday Lunch at £7.95. It opens every day of the week all day from 12pm until late.
