This is the only place in Melrose which serves cask ale but is not in the Good Beer Guide. It's not surprising really. The one handpump had Born Amber with a £3 a pint sticker, the same price I'd paid for a half in the previous establishment. It wasn't in a very good condition at all. Perhaps it was the very end of the barrel, as they were already advertising Greene King Abbot which was coming on next. Belhaven Best was available on keg. There was no cider on draught.
You enter into a stone floored bar. The pub has a smaller boarded room to the left with a larger dining room to the rear of that. The bar featured rugby shirts on the walls. There was also a TV.
Probably the worst of the 4 Melrose pubs I tried but at least the town's only takeaway option could be found on the street behind and there were a few magazines from the local CAMRA branch still hanging around from the summer.

The Station Hotel has long outlived the railway that provided the reason for its existence. Melrose still has several hotels and I suppose this one would always have been the more down-market one. It looks smart enough, a pleasant and well-presented old building, but the bar is a small affair with the appearance of an afterthought. (I got talking to a local in the Ship Inn around the corner, who told me there used to be a more traditional and much longer bar here.) Just one real ale available, Belhaven IPA, a rather citrusy brew but not unpleasant.
