I remember coming here a few years back on my first visit to Ullapool, and either my memory is at fault or they've had a radical redesign of this pub. It used to be much more like a pub, but there is now a dining room and kitchen on the right on entering, and the bar is a little bit of an afterthought at the far end of the room to the left. The floor looks new - very smart wood - and the tables are scrubbed pine for diners and a few high tables and appropriate chairs for the drinking area around the tiny bar.

Three hand pumps were available, with Deuchars IPA and 80/- from Caledonian, plus the local An Teallach Ale, which was a little cheaper than other pubs in the town, but at £3.50 a pint still considerably more than other tourist areas I have visited this year.

Weirdly, a stained glass panelled door - perhaps saved from the refurbishment? - is suspended from the ceiling (horizontally) just in front of the bar.

From the outside this looks to be a traditional waterfront tavern, but unfortunately inside it doesn’t live up to these high expectations. The right hand bar seems to be very much a restaurant complete with open kitchen, whilst the left has more of a cafe/bar feel to it with it’s chunky pine tables and light wooden flooring.

It looks as though there may be some renovation work underway – at one end there’s a modern hearth with grey slate tiles behind, fresh maroon paintwork and recessed shelving in the wall that was storing logs for the wood burning stove. Elsewhere there’s a patchy ceiling that looks to be work in progress, and rough plasterwork. There’s a relatively small corner bar at one end, and the window seats offer great views across the loch.

The food menu was fairly succinct, although didn’t offer much in the way of “pub grub” dishes. Most of the mains were around the £11 mark, going up to as much as £21 for the lobster. There was also a small specials board that added another two or three choices. Portion sizes were very generous however.

Beers on tap were Caledonian 80, Deuchars IPA and Crofters Pale Ale. Cider choice was disappointing with just Strongbow and Magners.
