An historic pub which has sadly followed the King Street craft trend, although this one does offer three cask ales. On this occasion those were Electric Bear’s Parity People, Utopian Brown Ale and Attic Ember, though they did go to pains to point out, somewhat smugly, that all three are vegan-compatible. My pint of Parity People was in good condition and quite refreshing. Around 30-odd craft beers were also listed on their blackboard, and you had to remember what number they were so the foreign barmaid knew which tap to use. There were also two real ciders from Sheppey’s. On entering, the bar presented a strong aroma of farts. The ambiance was far from peaceful due to the excessive screeching of a coven of students emitting fake laughter – this became unbearable and was the reason we didn’t stay for another pint. There was a TV screen, though this was switched off. A touchpad had been mounted on the bar with a sign indicating it was for tips – this seemed a bit rude. On the plus side they do give discount for Forces Veterans. I do hope this place can regain some of its more traditional character.

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer is a craft beer pub with pale ale, canned lager, sour and stout options, all listed on boards up on the wall to the right of the bar in the right rear corner. I went for half a Lazer Juice… £3.80 at 4.2%, pull the other one! They all taste the same to me… citrus! I’m actually partial to a bit of cider so was tempted by Fanny’s Bramble, but I decided against it because I’d not shaved for a few days. The bare décor and lack of atmosphere mean I’ll not be returning here.

Historical pub that has been turned crafty - taking the worse elements of a crafty conversion. Pumps with no clips. Beer board to work out what you want but the icing on the cake was the urinals converted from metal barrels. Wasn't funny the first time I saw it.
