Fairly basic St Austell house that's been whacked-around and feels a bit sad and scruffy. Pool and darts upstairs. Three ales on, the Tribute wasn't the best (NBSS 2) and mine must have been first out as the handle borked on first tug cos the vent was closed. Hyperactive barman who seemed to think I wanted to eat (??) and overloud music for a Friday afternoon. By far the weakest of the town’s quartet of pubs.

A nice historic three storey building on the main square, but inside is somewhat disappointing. Any original features have been removed, and the walls stripped back to white with minimal decoration, leaving a bare empty feel. There are a few tables laid up for eating but not much else. Beers from St Austell were ok but otherwise a wasted opportunity.

This is a tidy looking terraced Georgian building that apparently became a hotel in 1813 - hence the naming afer the duke. It is still a hotel. It is in rusticated granite, with keystone lintels and sash windows. It has a patio at the front and a beer garden at the rear. The interior is open plan, but there were originally two snugs, one either side of the entrance, before entering the bar area. The decor is white, with white ceiling and patterned carpet and there are mainly perimeter seats and standard chairs. Photographs of the local area and old tin mines are on the walls, and there are several crests above the bar. There is a dart board. They do food, but we didn't eat so can't comment on that. There is a TV, which was tuned to a music channel and playing at a decent level. The service was friendly and a few maturer locals were sat at the bar. Beer; usual tap stuff with St Austell Tribute and Dartmoor Best (decent) on handpull. A friendly place with a couple of real ales - i enjoyed it here - more than happy to have popped in for one.
