I was recommended to include this pub on my Edinburgh schedule by a well known pubs blogger, and he was not wrong. It has obviously changed a lot since Quinno's dire experience below. There are four hand pumps from reputable breweries, and a number of keg options plus cans, all listed on an easily readable and simply amended list to the left (see photo). 1
I went for two dark beers, the Pilot American Brown 4.9% which I'd seen in two or three pubs already, but this was its day; and Out There Ambassador 4.4%, a hazelnut stout that declared itself to be vegan, so how could I resist. I made them both NBSS 3.5. A stranger on the bar was a beer from Brass Castle, but there's a family connection, and although I didn't try the beer I did express my appreciation of what I now know is called an ambiogram (reads the same upside down) on the pump clip. Only downside: the pub dog has clearly failed an audition for the Hound of the Baskervilles and now feels the need to practise her ferocity on anyone coming through the door.

Expected big things here (Edinburgh CAMRA Pub of the Year 2020, no less) but pretty disappointing all-round. Enter to a semi-pentagonal room with a central supporting pillar which rather gets in the way, although weirdly it houses a makeshift keg bar which the barmaid had to shuffle over to when required. The interior is light, rattly and feels half-finished, with a greyish white paint covering the square boxed wood panelling. The paint failed to disguise the smell of damp, which was pervasive. Toilets are woke, the old ladies and gents are now gender neutral - except that nothing has happened to correct the fact that one room has nothing but stalls and the other is mainly urinals, so I fail to see how that can possibly please anybody on a practical level aside from voyeurs and sex pests. To the bar; four cask on with beers from Totally Brewed, Two by Two, Cromarty and Hybrid. The Hybrid Groat was awful, liquefied cheese. Took it back and to be fair to the barmaid she tried some and agreed, took it off and exchanged it but it should never have got to that stage without being picked-up. The resulting Cromarty Atlantic was much better (NBSS 3.5). That saved the day, otherwise I'd be scoring much lower.
