A * CAMRA heritage stop-off on the way back down the hill. Inside is an unassuming small bar; I didn’t really see anything to justify the heritage listing and the website is oddly silent as to why it’s on there. Music TV playing with a different track coming out of the speakers which made for some interesting crossover. A heated round-robin tourno of sweary dominoes was underway at the bar which provided some entertainment. Not much choice at the jump, so the classic Guinness default it was. Served a purpose and we got a bit of curiosity banter from the dominellos as I suspect we were the first English they’d seen in the place for many a year.

Dating from 1874, a major refurbishment in 1998 returned it to the style and character of that time (or so it says on the plaque outside). The compact, stone walled interior has a wood and tiled floor, an ornate gantry and a tiled fireplace (but no fire, despite it being winter). The TV and louder than necessary music detract slightly from the traditional atmosphere, but an attractive pub nevertheless. McEwan's 80 Shilling, Tartan Special, Belhaven Best, Guinness, Tennent's and Stella Artois lagers and Strongbow cider are all available on draught.
