This must be one of the oldest pubs in Kilmarnock as it's on the oldest road as the sign on the wall reads, next to the pub. The Old Town Bridge, built in 1782 lies at the north end of the Sandbed. Looking east from the bridge there can be seen the New Bridge, built in 1804 as part of King Street. Between the bridges is to be found a passage known as ‘the hole in the wa’. Beside it was ‘The Thieves Hole’, a jail in which covenanters and common criminals were imprisoned. Before the opening of King Street, the Sandbed was the town’s main thoroughfare, being the coach road from Glasgow to Ayr.

Tucked away in an odd corner off the main shopping area, it's fairly typical of a smaller, older style drinkers pub. One smallish square room with bench seating round three walls with the counter in one back corner and a dart board in the other, perilously close to a corridor leading to the toilets. Furnished with Britannia tables and other cast iron based tables, there are screens and machines but not the constant music of other pubs. The keg beer was also without the taint of uncleaned lines and badly washed glasses normally found in Kilmarnock pubs. The decor is restrained, being old photos, Guinness adverts and a large poster showing a pub crawl of the Clyde Valley. The customer base is mainly male including that uniquely west coast Scottish middle aged man with an attitude to sculptural hair care and a certain dress code, and that is not a gay euphemism - think Jamesie Cotter the earlier Rab C Nesbitt programmes only slicker. Apart from the disco lights, in the right location and with the right beer this could be a gem.
