The George Hotel was just about the highlight of a trip around Argyll last week. It is the only pub with cask ale in Inveraray and is located right in the centre of the village.

Being a weekday afternoon, I was too early to visit the public bar (at the right-hand end of the building) which I believe opens at 5pm. I did contemplate returning later in the evening but the "cocktail bar/dining room" was very busy and there seemed to be a good atmosphere. Most tables were taken by diners but I did spot a couple playing draughts on one. I was invited to take a seat at the bar, which I duly did.

The cocktail bar is off to the left-hand side of a central corridor which contains the hotel's reception desk and the toilets. It felt quite atmospheric with exposed stone walls and a beamed ceiling with tree branches and fairy lights. There was a tiled floor and a roaring real fire.

At the bar, there were a couple of handpulls. As with everywhere else in Argyll, if cask ales are served at all, they always seem to be from the local Fyne Ales. The bar here was stocking Jarl & Highlander. Keg options included Fyne Ales Workbench IPA & Rook Stout. I note that CAMRA state there are 3 cask ales. So, possibly the bar stocked a different option. As usual, there was a large selection of whisky and of particular note was a fine old cash register, just used for display these days. A wifi code is also available behind the bar, which is useful as there is no mobile reception inside.

Good Beer Guide listed and with a good atmosphere, even on a Friday afternoon, I would happily return here.

All earlier reviews on this site still stand the test of time. I have checked out other websites on this hotel and I have not found any bad reviews. Great review below from Pub SignMan. The present George Hotel, Inveraray, was originally two private houses completed in 1770. They were part of a project by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, started in 1744, to build a whole new town in Inveraray. This was to be the first example in Scotland of a planned town. In 1776 the 5th Duke of Argyll ordered that the ground floor flat of each of these private houses would be made into temporary churches for the Gaelic and English speaking congregations. The Public Bar, Front Lounge and Church Hall now cover these two churches. In 1860 the two private houses were amalgamated into the George Hotel by the Clark family, in whose possession the hotel still remains. Generation seven now resides in the hotel. The present owner, Donald Clark, has carefully and sensitively restored and enhanced the bedrooms, restaurants and bars to create a unique atmosphere. The Duke of Argyll employed the services of Adam and Milne, renowned architects of their time. Together they built the first planned town in Scotland, Inveraray. The buildings in the main town remain whitewashed with blackened window surrounds.

I recently spent a very pleasant afternoon in this large, multi roomed, pub/restaurant. The pub is split into a cosy public bar and a larger and lighter main bar which houses the main dining space. The stone interior is complimented by muted lighting which creates a lovely ambiance and those who were eating and drinking all seemed to be in good spirits whilst I was there.
Two ales from the Fyne brewery were on and the Highlander was in fantastic shape and very drinkable. They also had a vast whiskey selection available.
We ate here as well and the food was also excellent. I tried the steak pie, which was full of succulent chunks of steak with a lovely homemade pastry. Wetherspoons this is not. Most meals came in at very reasonable prices given the quality of the food.
There was a music festival being hosted at the Hotel when we were there, with a small stage erected in the garden and a good crowd enjoying the performers. Those who stayed inside were able to enjoy muted coverage of the Grand Prix in the public bar. The staff were very friendly and patient and friends who stayed in the hotel itself over the weekend said the rooms were very good as well.
Not too many negatives to report. I really enjoyed this place and it seems to be well respected by the locals as well. I would have no hesitation recommending this pub to anyone who is going to be in or around Inveraray.
