Visited 09/04/26. Visited previously 16/02/23.
Cask here was four hand pumps, all dispensing and offering Jemima's Pitchfork and Hancocks HB both from the Glamorgan Brewing Company, Try SA from Brains and their own branded Blue Bell bitter. Keg offering of Heineken, Peroni, Moretti, Guinness, dark fruits SB, Inch's, Amstel, Cruz, Camden Pale and Tiny Rebel Clwb Tropica.
Seating outside on the pedestrianised St Mary's St and occupying that end thereof and so near to the castle. Inside it is bare boarded apart from a grand large tile skirt around the L shaped bar counter which follows the inside of the L shaped venue. A couple of tall stools at the short side of the bar counter but seating opposite the bar counter is via a studded green leather banquette along the right-hand wall to the end of the bar counter serving regular tables. Similar arrangement with the rear wall in terms of seating, but there, the left- and right-hand sides are split in the middle by a floor to ceiling divider that creates cosier corner seating on the ends of this section. Walls are wood panelled and looks like old anaglypta on the ceiling. Several screens were showing silent sport and a very gentle music soundtrack, the predominate sound that of the chatter of patrons in the venue. The venue is a nice, small and cosy City centre pub that feels quite unchanged (apart from the number of TV's) since I started coming here as the Goat Major when in Cardiff from the late 1980's, usually around visiting then Cardiff Arms Park for Wales rugby matches. Definitely worth a visit when in the town centre.

Established in 1813, this had been known as the Goat Major from 1995 to 2021 when the original name was reinstated through the acquisition by the Croeso Pub Co; at some point it has expanded leftward into the adjacent building sometime after 2017.
The floor is modern bare boarded then lots of dark wood panelling, studded grey banquettes then conventional furniture, games machines, Welsh flag bunting and multiple TVs, unwatched by lots of exuberant local Welsh customers.
Cask amounted to Glamorgan Jemimas Pitchfork (Google it) and Blue Bell Ale then Brains SA, £2.40 a half and fine.
Not too bad a place on balance.

A traditional looking and fairly narrow fronted pub more or less opposite the castle, it’s quite small inside as well and all seats were taken on our recent Wednesday evening visit.
Internally it’s an upside-down L shape, with the rear area extending slightly further around to the left. Décor wise it’s quite traditional too with sanded wooden boards on most of the floor with some coloured tiling adjacent to the bar counter, and much of the ceiling having some attractive pale woodwork with inlaid dark green panelling which lent it something of an elegant air. Elsewhere the ceiling was a more familiar nicotine yellow whilst the top part of the walls were painted mauve. Much dark wood panelling was in evidence though, forming the bar counter, a large fireplace, moulded sections above the benches with inlaid mirrors and blackboards and in some cases extending out from the walls to form partitions inlaid with etched glass. Seating was a mixture of dark green fitted banquettes around the permitter, along with regular chairs elsewhere and some stools at the bar. A TV screen was showing a darts match which seemed a little out of place perhaps, but fortunately the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.
Beers on tap were their own Blue Bird Ale along with Butty Bach, Santa’s Little Belter and Jemima’s Pitchfork. Two further pumps appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Strongbow, Strongbow Dark Fruit and Inch’s Medium. Overall, a pretty decent little pub, and I’d happily pop in again if in the area.
