The Stonecroft Inn, Llanwrtyd Wells

Tucked away up a side street, this was the better of the two pubs we tried in Llanwrtyd Wells. It is a fairly simply furnished locals' pub. The front bar has red walls, some framed rugby shirts opposite the bar, some pumpclips above the bar and a large screen TV showing the Women's Rugby Union World Cup final. Surprisingly the locals in were supporting England. There is also a stone fireplace and a cabinet full with trophies.

A rear room had a smaller TV showing Sky Sports News, a pool table and a fruit machine. There is a car park to the right-hand side.

Whilst the 2 available cask ales were a bit more mainstream than the Neuadd Arms Hotel down the road, the one I chose was in a much better condition and the landlord pulled the beer through as mine was the first of the day, something that the barmaid had failed to do in what is the town's Good Beer Guide pub.

Brain's The Rev James Original is the regular cask ale. I opted for the guest, which was Wychwood Hobgoblin Session IPA. A third handpull was unclipped. Meanwhile, ciders were all from Thatcher's - Gold, Juicy Apple, Cloudy Lemon, Blood Orange & Apple & Blackcurrant. The pub dogs offered us a friendly welcome but seemed to dislike some more punters that followed us in.

This pub may not have made an appearance in the Good Beer Guide since 2014 but on the basis of my visit, it serves the better cask ale.
