Many towns seem to have one large old fashioned hotel with a public bar and they often have the same feel to them. The Wellington is Brecon’s example. It has a large bar that feels very open and roomy but retains the traditional hotel atmosphere that I actually quite like. On hand pump they only had Brains SA bitter which was a reasonable pint at £5.15, whilst being nothing to write home about (NBSS 3). Whilst I was in there a couple of dozen reenactors of the Victorian Association came in dressed in the uniform of the 24th Regiment of Foot on campaign in South Africa in 1879. They were here for an event the following day at the Barrack’s Museum. This made for an interesting evening and swayed my opinion of the place even more to the positive. Staff were okay but not particularly welcoming. I would certainly go back if in town and recommended if you like the traditional hotel vibe.

Well described by others, below. It all felt a bit chaotic, with the various staff members, some of them clueless, all doing their own thing rather than working as a team. Food was basic modern pub food, priced just over average for the area, the menu very similar to the nearby Wetherspoon’s but lower in quality, probably not as good value. Only one ale on, Pedigree, which was in average condition. Also available were Guinness, Neck Oil, Inch’s Riverside, Old Mout, Barry Island IPA, Moretti, San Miguel, Brains’s Bayside and Carlsberg. On the plus side they let dogs in, and it was fairly convivial. OK for a quick visit.

One of Brain's hotels, located in a prominent position in the centre of town. Entering through various lounges, the fairly modern bar extends off behind the reception desk, with a handy courtyard area to the side. I didn't find the games area mentioned below, so not sure if that is still there. The range of Brain's beers is quite good though, with Bitter, SA, Rev James, Rev James Gold and a special on.
