Impressive and unusual looking stone building. Interior is sadly modern, rattly and fairly sparse; two rooms with drinking to the right which is where I sloped. Brick arches and office grade carpet here, akin to a provincial social club. The charming stained glass windows were the only saving grace, unfortunately I had my back to them. Four pumps with three Mabby Brewing beers. Both of mine were awful concoctions, the green especially tasting like lemony Fairy Liquid. NBSS wise, 2.5 and 3. WhatPub describes this as ‘a progressive brewpub’ – well if that’s what progression tastes like, I’m all for regression.

An excellent brewpub, quite large having apparently extended into neighbouring properties. Being greeted by an overwhelming smell of hot mashed malt is a splendid welcome, but perhaps I was just lucky! The interior is perhaps a little bleak and designerish, almost Scandinavian in parts, with plain dark tables and chairs, although there is an area of sofas to one side and a conservatory at the back. The beer is the draw though, with a good selection of their own (Mabbys) ales, guests and the occasional tap takeover. Their brews are a little confusing as they are known only by colours and strengths, with no further description. This does make a good excuse to try them all though (I liked the Green - a hoppy, full-bodied bitter). Worth a visit, and only 2 minutes from the station (ignore the map route - there is an entrance on the nearer side).
