Sidestreet pub of surprising size, looks like three subsumed properties. Knocked-through of course but the feel of the previous rooms remain. Has been recently done-up in a fairly modern manner but less gruesome than some others of the genre. That said, it’s a bit gloomy further back as the daylight can’t penetrate but it looks like this area is mainly used for weekend discos anyway. There's also a surprisingly sizeable rear beer garden. Says ‘real ale’ outside but not a handpump to be seen, so one for the trading standards department at the local council. A very basic keg selection so I decided to reacquaint myself with John Smiths Smooth which in fairness was decent given my exceedingly low expectations. You won’t be leaving the Australia or Spooners for this one unless you’re a sad case ticker like me.

This pub appears to be three of the New Street terraced houses knocked into one so I wonder how old it actually is. I first spotted it in the late 1990s and that's all I can vouch for as not having noticed it in the mid 1970s doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't here.
Inside it is wooden floored with the bar at the back and split into separate areas which would tie in with it being converted houses. A board advertising a whole raft of footbore games was outside so this is clearly where people come to watch all that rubbish.
The solitary handpump had been selling Theakston's Lightfoot but had run out. This left a dilemma, whether to walk out or drink something really horrible from a global abomination. I went for the latter and the half of Guinness (£1.70) was just as poor as I expected even though the pub was serving it well. My mind drifted back to the excellent pint of Sadler's beer I had the day before in Machynlleth at only 30p more for a pint and wondered how the pubcos can possibly justify these prices.
I can't see a return visit happening.
