Tidy exterior, I’m guessing 1920s or early 30s. Internally it's whacked-through into a right angle with a dedicated family area off to the right side. Decor has succumbed to the curse of the grey paintbrush though the bar back remains incongruous in its wooden glory and at least everything has been kept well. No cask, so a particularly good Guinness for me. It’s a local pub for local people but I didn’t feel particularly unwelcome. 5.5

The perfect 1930s exterior of the Crown raises hopes only for the interior to dash them. The street doors indicate there must have been several rooms, but the former walls that divided them have long since been replaced by slim pillars. The bar counter has an echo of the pointed gables above the side and front doors, so maybe this is the original, with each room having it's own access to it. I got the impression of a well used local, with Ladies Night advertised on one A-board, and a kids menu on another. No real ale, so I made do with a half of John Smiths Smooth Crap.
