Classed as the oldest pub in Newport, the Olde Murenger House's medieval exterior is very impressive and it's not too shabby inside either. The front section of the pub feels the most traditional. It is bare boarded with old pictures of Newport on the walls. The bar itself has some nice wood panelling next to it and can be found in the centre of the pub. To the rear is a more comfortable carpeted section up 3 steps.
There are a couple of handpulls on the bar. Both were dispensing the Oak Cask version of Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter. An advertising board outside proclaimed it to be the only pub in Wales serving beer from an oak cask. I gave it a try and it was a little more superior to the regular OBB. The usual keg Samuel Smith's options were available, including his Organic Cider.
Drinks menus were available on each table. The young barman seemed to have a fairly relaxed attitude. I certainly wasn't berated for using a mobile phone. Drinks menus could be found on each table and a folk music night was being promoted.
Similar to the previous reviewer, I was here on a Sunday afternoon. There were a couple of fairly rough fellows, one guy reading a book (he also had his mobile phone out) and another group of around 6 people other than ourselves. As such, it seemed a bit busier than during the previous reviewer's visit but the section to the rear remained unoccupied.

Just me and a pair of ex-coppers bemoaning the state of the current local constabulary. Bit of swears, Humph Junior runs a less tyrannical empire down south. Cask OBB over-chilled but drinkable enough (NBSS 2.5). I could see the VPL of the repair where the ceiling collapse was last time I was here. It's a lovely place this, but three customers on a Sunday afternoon...
July 2016
Aged looking (but actually only 1816) timber-framed Sam Smith's house although not quite as olde worlde inside as you'd expect, the flooring and some of the fittings are clearly not that old (it re-opened under Sam’s stewardship in 1983). Long and narrow, decorated in deep mustard colour with the bar halfway down. To the right is a set of maroon banquettes stretching round an opaque leaded lattice glass window. To left, beyond a new wood panel divide and up steps, is an area with a main room and a couple of snug-like areas with lots of what appears to be modern wood panelling. Styled as a haven in the ‘superpub ghetto’ and that is indeed true, with no music and interesting bar chat (the locals, I learnt, don't like Anglesey). Unfortunately there are obvious and immediate maintenance issues, with fixed plastic sheeting covering a partial ceiling collapse and obvious signs of damp elsewhere. Usual Sam's range with OBB on cask, in good nick and, unusually, at a sensible temperature rather than freezing cold which unveiled the finest example of it I’ve encountered. If you're in town it's worth a look. Oh and as for the name, a 'Murenger' is a Medieval term for a tax collector. So now you know. Rated 7

Lovely old building, benches in the front area and dim lit moody back area, bar in the middle. Sam Smiths
