After the disappointment of the Usk Vale, the Lyceum Tavern proved to be a welcome surprise. Situated close to a junction of the M4, the area is busy with traffic. However, the pub is located on a little side road parallel to the main road into Newport and has quite an attractive exterior.

Inside, was quite dark with the main room wrapping around the central bar, although not connected at the rear. There is a small stage area near the front windows, where a TV on a stand was playing a music channel. To the rear right and down a step was a small room with a bookcase full of books and where I seem to recall some board games.

A real ale (Black Sheep Respire) was on and was being sold at £3 a pint. I was surprised to find it in good condition. The barmaid seemed fairly friendly, as did the other customers, who all seemed to know one another. The pub was gradually starting to get busier on my late afternoon visit with the after-work crowd beginning to arrive for a Friday night session.
