Peter Forster left this review about The Castle Inn
The oldest pub in Newport, an inscription above the huge fireplace provides a data of circa 1684. Other sources suggest King Charles 1st visited during his imprisonment at nearby Carisbrooke Castle. At first glance this seems impossible as he was headless by then, however it seems this is a date of reconstruction after a fire and the premises actually dates from the 16th century. A stone floor and fairy lights adorning black wood beams create an odd but pleasant medievalish atmosphere. This is spoilt by the obligatory piped music. Why? The bar maid is welcoming and chatty and it is easy to get into conversation with other customers at the bar. I have a pint of Holy Joe from Yates Brewery (£5.00), which is an okay NBSS 3. My second favourite pub in Newport and will return if in town.

A nice old frontage and you are greeted by some splendid ceiling beams and woodwork inside, but the effect is ruined by numerous strings of fairy lights hung in all directions. The room behind is a bit tedious while to the rear is a courtyard covered in Astroturf and a side function room with its own bar. A pair of handpumps dispensed Ghost Ship and Old Rosie. All in all, a pub with considerable but unrealised potential and could be much better.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Castle Inn
Claims plausibly to be Newport's oldest pub, and it certainly looks the business both outside (with venerable brickwork) and within (with very dark wood panelling and imposing fireplaces). Partly opened-out at some stage, but retaining a decent amount of character in the various seating / dining areas. With three of four handpumps in operation, I found Ringwood RazorBack, Bombardier Burning Gold and Nethergate Suffolk Country (£3.80) on offer.
