I was cutting across Wales from Llanidloes on the eastern side to near Aberystwyth on the west coast, and spotted this heritage pub and Good Beer Guide entrant just off my direct route, so thought I'd give it a go. The Talbot Hotel consists of a 19th century white-painted building with a portico, and the pub in an older building to the left in traditional stone which is no longer whitewashed but stripped back to stone with lighter mortar picking out each individual stone. CAMRA's heritage interior description says it's 18th century and I'm not going to argue. Service seems to be from the main bar in the back room, though the counter extends into the front left, and I expect it would be possible to get served there when it's busy. Three beers from Ludlow, Conwy and Purple Moose breweries, and I went for the latter's Cwrw Madog 3.7% (NBSS 3.5, £4.60/pint). I was here during the quiet mid-afternoon, midweek period, enjoying my beer and relaxing. Should have been checking my route, as I subsequently found myself in Llanbedr Pont Steffan (Lampeter) to the south-west instead of heading towards Llanon (WNW). Oops.

Interesting bar with two armchairs by roaring fire. Back bar seems more for locals. Shame only two real ales from big breweries, otherwise would be higher rating. Dogs welcome.

A pub with a beautiful stone wall interior - some real character. Had a number of real ales on when I went, but I didn't think much of them myself - the Double Dragon tasted tinny and the Champflower from stillage was foul; I assumed it was the landlords home brew (it wasn't), it came complete with strange mushroom slither in the glass. I want to like the place...but the beer needs to be much better than this. Potential though.
