The Bencoolen was the name of a ship that got shipwrecked off the coast nearby back in the nineteenth century. As you enter from the car park, there is a large mural of the ship on the left-hand wall, which is quite impressive. Although its location next to a pool table undermines in. The rest of this room is used for diners.
With the serving area in front of you, there is further seating space beyond the bar itself and off to the right near the pub's main entrance.
I was soon engaged in conversation with a guy who was visiting the area to do some kind of engineering work on a pipeline. He was the sort of guy who would chat to just about anybody entering and on just about any subject. This at least provided some entertainment.
Doom Bar, Proper Job & Legend are the real ales.
