Off Stonegate – but not a Stonegate pub – accessed up a clearly signposted back passage and well described below, this was my first choice having just attended an OMG gig at nearby Museum Gardens.
Dating from 1644 – possibly much earlier – so supposedly the oldest hostelry in York and who am I to argue, with much nookie spaces and wood panelling. However, the relentless displays of LBGTQ+ bunting was irritating and the pub was virtually empty at the time of my Thursday visit around 10.20.
The cask selection was somewhat pathetic, with a pump for Rosie’s unreal cider, five unused pumps, then just Old Peculiar and 4-4-Brew Pale Ale, £2.95 a half and flabby tasting, served by a dismissive barman, perhaps the one encountered by Blue Scrumpy.
With the tiresome virtue signalling and feeble ale choice – not to mention the quality of what little was on offer – I feel disinclined to return; York has so much better to offer.

Claims to be the oldest inn in the city, and whether this is true or not, it's certainly convincing enough as a courtyard tavern that understandably appeals to many tourists. The crossbar sign above Stonegate is a eye-catching feature; just as well, since the narrow passageway off the street is very inconspicuous. However, the most interesting feature is a coloured glazed screen for the former Brett Bros brewery (and the more prosaic name of the 'Star Inn') just to the left as you enter. The multi-room interior has only been partly opened out, so that retains a fair amount of character too. Greene King IPA, Abbot and a 'house' Best Bitter (no doubt from the same brewery) available from a row of eight handpumps, along with Landlord, Old Peculier and Old Rosie cider.

An ancient multi-roomed pub down a passageway meets corporate Greene King with predictable results. Actually it's not too bad at quiet times but avoid at peak tourist periods. Ales on typically various GK plus a few Yorkshire guests like TT Landlord and Old Peculier, tending to be served too cold but otherwise ok.
