Traditional double fronted pub (Craft Union) at the far end of the high street, an L shape inside with the counter straight ahead. Remodelled to a single room, it retains banquette seating and Britannia tables with stools as well as being half carpeted. There are a fair number of screens and a machine, decor is mainly from old photographs and there’s an old an OS map of the town on part of one wall. Three pulls in the centre bracketed by a six tap T-bar, casks from Theakstons, Moorhouses and Fullers Seafarer, usual lagers (7 including doubled up Carling), fruit cider (2) and Guinness plus John Smiths Smooth twice. The White Witch had run off so I had the Theakstons and it was fairly good. A friendly sort of place. It does take card payments and opens at 11, WhatPub is slightly out of date. There’s a room to the far left which I think is a function room.

Locals pub at bottom of High St. Surprisingly smaller inside than it looks from outside, with one large room and a slightly more comfortable side area by the bar. Felt very much like one of those pubs where conversation stops when strangers walk in. Usual John Smith and Black Sheep ales on offer, but also Ossett at time of visit. Fair, although perhaps a slightly run-down feel - certainly room for improvement.
