Old Boots left this review about The Dubliner

The much loved Maltings is no more, swept away on a tide of fake Irishness and barleypop for the stag and hen trade. A major tragedy for the serious beer drinkers of York and those who come to York as one of the U.K.s premier beer destinations. The Irishness consists of constant diddly diddly and other music, some old photos of what I originally assumed to be Dublin but are actually of York. There’s a shelf or two of miscellaneous old fashioned items, some cask ends oirishly inscribed and a fair bit of Guinness tat. There are four Guinness fonts and four for Madri, that’s it beer wise. The fireplace has been removed and the furniture is new and higher both bench and posing table formats, the old tiled floor remains but the front door is realigned and the front right side area more segregated. I had half of Madri and it set me back an outrageous £3.50. No; not even for the live music.

Popped in for a valedictory visit before the departure of the longstanding licensees. Self-described as ‘a pub for grown-ups’ and is pretty much as I recall from the reviews below - it's a cracking alehouse interior with an atmosphere to match. Is the toilet in the right-hand room new or had I missed it on previous visits? Today’s haul was seven cask, six ciders and some craftycans. My Beartown Mild lacked a bit of mid-afternoon turnover but was still GBG-worthy (NBSS 3) and came in a nice clean glass this time. 8.5

Has had a sympathetically-done extension since my last visit, though as we discovered the pub is still very busy and seats are at a premium. A good range of ales at the bar, and the staff were very efficient and good-humoured. A shame then, that my Squawk Pale was a murky and came in a glass so pitted it may well have remembered the Miner’s Strike. The beer I could write-off as being unlucky (and it would have gone back had there not been a scrum at the bar) but the terrible glass is a lack of basic handicraft. A real shame as the pub itself is very good. Rated 7

One of the classic 'must-visit' pubs in York (and there are a few of those) the Maltings benefits by being close to the station and just far enough out of the warren of that constitutes the town centre that you don't get too lost on leaving for your train. The exterior has been painted black (presumably because of the Black Sheep connection) which does make it look a little intimidating to the casual observer, though I think it looks quite smart myself. The interior is really quite small with an old tiled floor, rudimentary furniture and numerous old tin signs along the walls advertising products long since gone. When it gets busy (which is a given after 7pm most days) you may well find yourself standing. Noticed that the place had been voted AFC Bournemouth Exiles Pub of the Year - guess that long journey must be worth it. There's usually 7 ales, with Black Sheep bitter the regular. Had a pint of Otley on my last visit, which really was tip-top (and got some banter for wearing my Wales shirt). Noticed there was a decent range of Belgian beer available, plus a real cider. A definite must-visit pub in general and a great place to take a tourist to in York. Rated 8

Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Maltings

My latest visit to the Maltings was on a freezing cold Monday afternoon. It was much quieter than previous visits, but is still one of my favourite pubs, if not the favourite, in this wonderful city for pubs.

The pub has a traditional alehouse feel with bare boards, lots of old signs and even an old toilet in one corner, which I sat next to.

Black Sheep Best Bitter is the regular beer. Guests were Blonde & Imperial Yorkshire Stout, also from Black Sheep and Rooster's Easy-Going Assassin, Kirkstall Embargo, Ampersand The Cap & Two By Two Southpaw IPA. Redwillow English IPA was being pulled through.

I missed the traditional cider board above the bar at first, but the selection was still fairly impressive - Venton's Sweet Maid, Glyders Medium, Ampleforth Abbey Cider, Gwatkin Game Cock, Heck's Farmhouse & Newton Court Lonely Partridge Perry. I doubt there is a better range of ciders anywhere else in York and indeed I note that it is the local cider pub of the year.

Craft beers were Thornbridge Green Mountain, Turning Point Disco King, Vibrant Forest Kick Start & Yonder Cherry and Dark Choco Sour.

Tucked away in a corner, I couldn't see if anybody was eating. Although I still fondly recall having a massive plate of food here once, that I had no chance whatsoever of finishing.
