Very much a food-led pub next to Cattal station but it retains a good and comfortable drinking area round the bar and, more importantly, some drinkers who frequent it so still feels nicely pubbish. With carpet dating from the dreadful 'tartan' era, the front and roadside rooms are relatively plain, with a more resplendent restaurant room to the other side, an extension to the back and a very smart "library" room for small functions. Not content with naming a house beer, they also claim to brew it, although it is from Rudgate and is probably Battleaxe. Nicely drinkable though. A second handpump serves a guest, on this visit Rudgate Jorvik. The food, as previously mentioned, is very good and not pretentious. Note that the whole area is proposed for a major housing development so things might change if it goes ahead.

Very handily placed just outside Cattal railway station, but sadly with no afternoon opening through the week. A little anchronistic in its decor with red and cream predominating, that's in the carpets and the upholstery but all done in the best possible taste. There are two linked drinking areas on the station side of the building with a common counter, one side in brick, the other in wood. It only has two handpumps, one serving the house beer Balky's Best Bitter brewed by nearby Rudgate and the second was also a special from Rudgate although I believe other guests make an appearance. To each side are dining areas and there's a garden at the rear. Surpisingly busy given its slightly isolated location it is very popular for food.

Called in for a pint yesterday (05/09/2007). The place was heaving with diners and I have to say the food looked and smelled marvelous.
The beer was spot on and the ambience simpy delightful.
Note to diary : Must eat there sometime!
