A large village inn which has become a smart eatery but still has some nice ales. Inside it has been opened out to some extent but remains divided into various areas in a rambling layout. Flooring is plain board or tile, decor is grey and minimalist, furnishings are upmarket. It is mostly low-tabled for dining, with a couple of specific restaurant areas including an "orangery" but there are a few stools and a couple of tables by the wood-faced bar for drinkers. There is also an outdoor area at the front and some letting rooms behind. Four handpumps offered Black Sheep Best, Helmsley Howardian Gold and Theakston's Best and Lightfoot - condition very good. The food also looked pretty good and was not stupidly gastro. Definitely not a rustic local but quite pleasant and I would return.
