Another one where memories were sparse so a swift revisit was in order. An historic place which, whilst molested and whacked-through over the years, retains a bit of tradition. Sympathetically decorated in red and cream with varnished wood trim and wainscoting. Lively atmosphere with a friendly barman behind the jump. Six ales on, my Ainstey Assassin Oatmeal was a decent drop (NBSS 3.5) as befits the GBG entry. Bar billiards table exists, though was covered, so assume not available for everyday punter use.

Recent revisit found that the interior has had a little touching-up and seems a bit more homely than recalled - I don’t recall the leather banquette seating previously. The wood and stained glass partition separating the main bar from the snug area was a nice touch. Five ales on the go and my Saltaire Blonde was very drinkable. Also a couple of boxed ciders. A solid performer and worth including on a city centre crawl. Its position off the main Micklegate run means that it’s a good bet for an evening drink without the gyp that crops up elsewhere. A very good find down a narrow side-lane off the main street, this pub retains the air of a locals-only haven within the city centre. The interior is larger than you’d imagine (partially open-plan) and was apparently refurbed in the early 90's, not that you'd necessarily notice, so it was good to see the stained-glass windows being retained. The main bar is a fairly spartan affair, with bare-floorboards, black beams and bench seating though there's a carpeted snug a bit further over that has some Civil War tit-bits for viewing. Rear beer garden. The range of ale (six in total) was good as was the quality. Atmosphere inside felt warm and convivial. Would return. Rated 7

Splendid old-school pub up a side alley with a strong local following. There are three areas joined into one, all with a glorious mismatch of old benches and stools. A bar billiards table stands at one end and there are tables out in the yard behind. Some surviving glasswork adds to the character and it is generally a fine place for a pint or several. This is helped by half a dozen handpumps offering a good and changing selection of mainly local ales. A serious ale drinkers' pub.

Tucked away down a little alley - this is a locals pub. A bit rough and ready inside but Good Beer Guide recommended and friendly locals and pub dog - who likes to lick your shoes, by way of introduction.
