A traditional stone-built village pub, in a part of Sheffield that still has the feel of a village. Inside there are exposed stone walls, wooden beams and panelling, with carpets throughout. There are four rooms arranged around a central bar, one room having tables set for dining. We settled in the small room at the front left soon after opening time, but when the TV by the bar was turned on we escaped to the dining room to get away from the excessive noise. We found a relatively peaceful spot by the fish tank.
The bar has two sets of two hand pumps, serving two beers: Hardy & Hansons Olde Trip and Caledonian All American Ale. We had the Old Trip, which was in good condition. One of the locals was drinking keg Whitbread Trophy, and told us that they used the pub in one of the TV adverts for this beer in the 1970s. A slightly dubious claim to fame, I would have thought, but he seemed to be enjoying his beer, which has presumably been his drink of choice for the best part of 40 years.
Of the two Greenhill pubs, I marginally prefer this one, but there's not a lot in it. I've scored them both the same by deducting a point for the aggressively loud TV. If that doesn't bother you, you can mentally award this a 7.
