A first visit for a very long time. There was a band warming up on the right, so I went in the room on the left. There are four hand pumps for beer and two for cider, but my Black Sheep Best was poured from a further set of pumps in the other room. (Too cold: NBSS 2.5, £4.80.) There is booth seating with what seem like ridiculously high, padded leather backs, but then put this together with the double glazed windows and this is clearly a sound proofing measure. The tables have tops that resemble the herringbone pattern in parquet floors, and it all looks good when combined with the dark wood bar counter with brightly polished elbow rail, and a rather nice piano in a walnut casing, sitting below a mirror in the end wall.

I remember coming in here when I moved to Sheffield and being very impressed to find the Sex Pistols' classic album Never Mind the Bollocks playing on the CD system. Although the then landlord has since retired, taking his 1960s Melody Maker front covers with him, it's still a music pub, with part of the main room to the right (the Shallow End, it says on the door) given over to a DJ and the swirling lights associated with discos. I suppose people whose ears are less susceptible to noise than mine are able to sustain a conversation here, but my time here nowadays would be spent with the Guardian crossword or, in this instance, writing a review for Pubs Galore.
There's been a bit of a recent smartening up, including a new inn sign, but sadly the beers on the bar were limited, real ale-wise, to just Tetleys Bitter and Abbeydale Moonshine. I don't know if the insipidity of the Tetleys was the fault of the brewer, the cellarman or the barman, but it was a very disappointing drink.
This is a late hours pub, to 1am most of the week, but 2am Thursdays and 3am at the weekend.
