It's very rarely that I pass through the doors of the Rutland, though I cycle past it often enough. People are always telling me how good it is, but I'm put off by how scruffy its classic Duncan Gilmour exterior is, and how tacky the carpet. The tiled front still has loads of stickers and flyers adhering to it, but now there's new carpet at the top of the steps, and new laminate flooring in the bar area, except where there's new carpet in a classic pub-like pattern. The juke box was playing selections from the "recommended" playlist (the "do not play these if you value your life - we know where you live" list is much longer) as I entered and approached the seven hand pumps on the bar. Three beers from local Blue Bee, plus four random outsiders. My eye was caught by Burton Bridge Burton Ale 4.8% (£4.69/pint) , which was cool and chewy, though sufficiently cloudy to fool the automatic focus on my camera (NBSS 3). I should come here more often, though it's still got a very foodie smell, so maybe in future I should check what time food service ends and turn up an hour later.

Traditional large ale house, a bit battered around the edges but great trad feel that seems rare, especially this close to a city centre. Juke box and good selection of well kept ales

A Sheffield institution, a single large room in a fantastic deco building from Gilmour the former Sheffield brewer, the inside has been thoughly gutted but retains a grungy charm beloved of generations of Sheffield uni students and others. Always seems to have decent beer from Blue Bee amongst others. Good for the station, grotty but cool.
