Will Larter left this review about The Punch Bowl

Although the Punch Bowl is still owned by True North, this company has ceased brewing and the two house beers are from Triple Point, Gold 4% and Bitter 3.7%. My halves of each came to £5 (NBSS 3.5). Other beers were Neepsend Dolcita, Atom Irish Stout and Shiny Pink Type Beats, the latter being a beer made with a hop variety called Pink, rather than being pink in colour; at least, I hope so. This pub seems popular in mid-afternoon with parents of very small children and a variety of other locals of all ages from 18 to 80. I didn't see any more cask beers being poured while I was here, but given the condition they were in, I imagine I'm not the only one drinking cask beers on Crookes.

I didn't realise how big this pub was from the outside, thanks to Will's photo. The interior was bright and modern, with yellow painted walls and a contrasting petrol blue lower down. The large bar area had a black and white tiled floor around the perimeter. The large lounge area on the left was carpeted with button back banquette seating. There was also a raised dining area at the rear. Six ales on handpump, two of which were from True North, fabulous brewery.

Since my previous review this pub has been in the hands of Greene King but has now been taken over by local True North brewing and pub company. It reopened in autumn 2019 after a refurbishment, and now features six hand pumps on the bar: three with their own beers (brewed behind the Forum Cafe Bar on the corner of Devonshire Green in the city centre), plus two from Bradfield and one from Blue Bee, so three local breweries represented. I went for the True North Best Bitter, which I have had before at the York down the road in Broomhill, where in my opinion their beers are seldom in very good nick; or perhaps it's just not a very good beer, as today's experience would suggest. Does this pub sell enough cask beer to justify six on the bar? A quiet Monday afternoon visit does not provide enough evidence one way or the other. Am I likely to come back at a busier time of week? The jury's out on that one too.
