This building dates from 1475 and has three ghosts, one of which is a dog. Located around the back of the bus station and I think it's worth a visit, especially to marvel at the dining room and the beer quality was very good. Four beers from Thwaites and two guest beers on our visit. The two guest on this occasion were Ossett Silver King and Yorkshire Blonde.

I won’t linger on a description of this venerable old building, well the outside is, inside is rather modernised in various styles. There seems to be a later extension to the rear and one side and a smaller timbered older bit which is the oft photographed part. The counter is in the main bar in the newer bit with six pulls, four beers from operators Thwaites, one of those reversed and Ossett Blonde, the last pump handle was blank. There are also three triple T-bars of normal stuff. A pump clip collection by the counter hints at a better choice on occasions. It’s very lounge bar in atmosphere due to, I think, the carpet and furnishings, the older part is nicer but looks purely for dining. I’m not a fan of Thwaites beers but the beer was adequate.

An aged, good looking Marstons pub that from the outside draws you in, unfortunately once drawn you find internally there is little character or ambiance about the place despite a more authentically original corner of the pub. An enthusiastic local showed our group a picture that clearly showed a ghost smoking a pipe by the fireplace, well it wasn't clear to me but I nodded anyway.
On the bar was a selection of Thwaites cask plus a guest of Ossett Blonde, the quality of which surprised me, it was very good.Despite well kept beer the pubs not for me and I'm unlikely to be drawn in again.
