With this being our last planned stop of the night (but how could we resist an improptu visit to the Sheffield Tap once back at the station), we were already sick of climbing hills, meaning the tiny slope to get here felt like the last leg of climbing Everest. Sheffield really is a city of hills.
The Forest is the brewery tap for the Toolmakers Brewery. It's a fairly small space with a basic small bar and a further raised area used as a games room and complete with a pool table and a dartboard. As with many Sheffield pubs, it was fairly quiet with the barmaid, another customer at the bar and I seem to recall a couple near the pool table.
3 real ales from the brewery were on - Bearing Puller, Black Edge & Lynch Pin. I chose the Black Edge which was passable, but not the best beer I'd had during the day.

Corner pub which is the tap for Toolmaker Brewery round the corner. Upper and lower levels with pool table, small stage and seating up a few steps. The five pump fitted counter has Toolmakers and other brewers beers plus usual pub standards on keg.

The Forest is located a short but uphill walk on Rutland Road from the Gardeners Rest and the other Valley of Beer pubs, but feels quite isolated from them due to the imposing railway bridge and arches cutting across Rutland Road and due to the amount of derelict industrial buildings that still remain between.
I arrived not long after 12.30pm on Saturday lunchtime to find an empty pub, bar the landlady who explained that it had been a very busy Friday night due to it being Karaoke night to kind of excuse why there was no one else in, and the right hand side of the single room pub where the small stage was did still show the signs on having been in heavy use the night before.
The landlady, who I established was originally from West London, was a very friendly and chatty soul, and we had a good chin wag about the re-gentrification of Kelham Island and Neepends and her bemoaning the fact that those improvements hadn’t got far enough yet for the benefit of the Forest.
With respects to this one bar pub, it is quite plain inside and sounds unchanged from previous reviews. It is still the Tap pub for the nearby Toolmakers Brewery and the three ales available were all from there in the shape of Lynch Pin Bitter, Battleaxe Blonde and Flange Noire Stout, with Westons Rosies Pig Cider on the fourth pump, and the fifth not in use. I went for the stout which was a bit thin for my taste, although it did benefit from a CAMRA card discount being applied.
I sincerely hope the general improvements to the area do reach this far because this is a friendly back street pub that probably needs all the help it can get for the future.
