Remains a fairly basic pub but there has been a bit of light refurbishment in the intervening years and it is now the Neepsend brewery tap (which is a continuation of the Little Ale Cart) but is under new ownership from previous. This time I finally sat in the larger room, which was very nice and has some nice old Wards stained glass windows alongside the interwar decor (CAMRA * graded). Went for the Neepsend offerings of Helhest (NBSS 4) and Ikeya Stout (3.5) whilst the missus went craftykeg. Friendly jolly boys service from behind the bar. A most satisfying 30 minutes, especially in light of the less-than-stellar visits to the KIT and FC the same day. 8.5

Seven handpumps with Little Ale Cart plus a number of smaller local breweries. I had an Ale Cart which was – shock – light and hoppy; but tasty, cheap and in good nick nonetheless. I also spotted some proper cider. Service was a bit brighter this time and perhaps as a consequence I tuned into some of the pub humour on the walls (the Real Ale Twats from Viz, ‘Challenge 60’ etc). Explored the rear smoking area which the licensee has made the most of in terms of decoration. Parts of the interior can perhaps be described as a little down-at-heel or ‘lived-in’ if you prefer. I enjoyed my visit and I can imagine it’d be a good one for a session at the right time. Rated 8

A traditional, multi-roomed backstreet boozer with plenty of unspoilt old school charm and a decent beer garden. Seven ales were available, the beer is served in oversized glasses and was competitively priced (between £2 and £2.40) and in good condition. The pub is the brewery tap for Little Ale Cart – I tried a couple of their beers which, while tasty, were a little samey despite the tasting notes behind the bar assuring me otherwise. There's also an excellent selection of Belgian bottles too. No piped music on my visit, just the pattering of the pub dog (Harvey). This place seems quieter than the KIT and the Fat Cat but that does give you a bit more room to admire the impressive stained glass windows. The barman was engrossed in his paper – I would have perhaps expected a little bit of extra chat rather than a perfunctory service, given the lack of other punters. I rather felt like I was getting in way of his quiet Tuesday afternoon. Worth a visit for the beer, it’s easily accessible by tram (Shalesmoor) and foot from the town centre. Rated 7.

During a recent Wednesday evening visit to the Wellington there was something going on in the left-hand bar so I decided to give it a miss after a recent experience of ending up in a terrible pub comedy night with no means of escape. I should mention that I have no idea what was going on in there, I just mention the comedy night as a past reference. The right-hand serving counter is found directly ahead of the entrance and there’s a thick carpeted seating area to the right front. The seven hand pumps were drawing five from Neepsend Brewery alongside Big Trip’s Winnebago Hotbox and Intrepid’s Solito. The barman was polite and the Neepsend Vulcan was good in this traditional pub that’s worth a look.

Another eclectic beer focused pub in not the most inspiring location, this one with a very interesting clientele and conversation buzzing throughout the pub. This area of Sheffield really is blessed!
