What a cracking pub! I've often been past the Big Gun but never set foot inside before, in nearly two decades in Sheffield. What have I been missing?

Well, there are three hand pumps, the first two with a hand-written notice, saying that "draught Stella is now available" (and thank God for that, say I!). The other had a skinny Santa crucified upon it.

All the woodwork in this pub is painted bright red - scarlet! Have they not read about how muted colours dampen people's excitement? Lager and red paint do not make a good mixture, as the scars on the face of my neighbour at the bar would testify. Did I mention the stools were red too?

There's no real ale, of course. Hand pumps all occupied, you see. Choice of John Smiths Super Smooth Ice Cold Crap or keg Stones for us non-lager-drinking types. Or Guinness. I had the Stones, which wasn't too bad - better than one of the real ales I had in Ecclesfield earlier, if truth be told.

Ask the landlord about the owl/blade brass plates.

Pool table, jukebox (free on saturdays)
