A first visit here enabled by the rain delay to the test match up the road. I've been impressed with the other Kirkstall Brewery pubs I've visited and this one maintains the high standard I've come to expect from a company who clearly know what a pub should look like. Decorated with breweriana without having the feel of a museum, the street level bar (is it upstairs?) is a delight. A good selection of beers on offer, mostly from the owners but with the slightly surprising addition of Harvey's Sussex Best. I had a couple of pints of Kirkstall Jasper, a very good pale ale, and a tasty snack of Smoked Mackerel Pate. I did have a brief exploration of the premises going down the almost hidden stairs to the cellar bar, which was deserted on this occasion, which would privide a significant overflow area at busy times.

I was here a few days after a photo of the flooded beer garden featured on many news sites, with two drinkers clutching their pints while sitting at benches with water up to their chests. Maybe this put a few prospective customers off, as it was very quiet at the time of my visit, whereas the West End House had been reasonably busy, for a winter Monday afternoon. Of the eight hand pumps available, half featured beers from Kirkstall brewery, the others being from Yorkshire micros. An array of keg fonts from "craft" breweries was also noted. I went in the street level entrance, where the bar is very smart, and didn't explore further (see other reviews below). I had a pleasant visit, with the smell of an open coal fire and the sound of unidentifiable indy music on the sound system accompanying my Grey Hawk Dark Desert Highway (from Copper Dragon's "craft" brewery) in a multi-sensory experience.

A fine pub and well worth a visit out from the city centre. Our train journey to Headingley only cost a couple of quid each return and then it was a good ten minute walk from the station. We visited here early doors on Friday when the pub opened at 12, so we had a prime spot in the snug, just behind the bar, with its own serving hatch.
There were 8 ales on handpump on our visit, so I went for the Kirkstall Three Swords, which was superb and served in a Kirkstall pint glass. The pub is traditional in style with the downstairs becoming slightly more modern in style.
The upstairs hosted a decorative stained glass panel in the bar side window, which was a nice feature. The pub also has a good reputation for food and tables were starting to fill as we left. Their beer doesn't have to travel far, as the brewery is only a few minutes away on the other side of the bridge.
