Very much the family dining pub as the smell confirms and it’s in the more upmarket part of Cross Gates. A T-shaped interior with the counter leading off to the rear, right is a less formal seating and eating area and to left is all tables and chairs. Five pulls on the counter with a selection of standard kegs on a couple of T-Bars, just the one cask was on; a warm flat Leeds Pale, Landlord was “conditioning in the cellar” and the others were reversed. Garden at rear. It has screens (off) and machines of course, and there’s a “grabber” machine but without minions for the kids. A few builder types were in on my visit. Tastefully furnished and carpeted decorated with a mix of decorative pictures. The Royal Ordnance Factory was down the road opposite, a blue plaque marks the site.

Looking like a former manor house, this is now an M&B Stonehouse Pizza & Carvery, sharing its name with former munitions works and a tank factory which used to be nearby. First impression on entering was how hot it was: on a mild March afternoon the heating in here must have been cranked up to the max. There were three real ales available: Purity Mad Goose, Leeds Pale and Hogs Back TEA. I went for the local beer, which was ok. Quite apart from the problem with the thermostat, this was a depressing place to have a beer, with no pub-like atmosphere, not many customers and perfunctory service. Doesn't look like I'll be coming back here, then.
