Directly opposite St James’ Hospital’s front door the interior is a largely unspoilt larger 1930s boozer, the exterior style is reminiscent of the Templar in the city centre. There’s a front and back bar served by a common servery with three faces, a removed wall and door indicating a previous small snug at the front left, this now houses a dart board. The main bar is to the right when entering the vestibule, banquette seating down the right hand wall, possibly once two rooms it houses the screen and machine. It has a splendid tiled floor and there’s an old Melbourne logo in the front window. The front servery is fairly magnificent with impressive woodwork and stained glass. Further back to the left is another bar, divided into two areas by a stained glass screen and with a lower ceiling, beyond is a seating area and off to the side there’s a room with a pool table. A horseshoe provides beers in each room, six national kegs in the front room and three in the back one, although the stained has stylised handpumps as a motif there is no cask beer.

Used to visit this fine old alehouse with my father in law.My wife and I decided to call in for old times sake and couldn't believe what we saw. There were 2 other customers in. I asked for a pint of hand pulled Tetleys and was told hand pulled ales were no longer sold as there was no call for it. I then asked for a bottle of Newcastle Brown - again I was told there was no call for it. We decided not to stay so left.Sadly what was once a great pub has fallen fro grace
